Paul Goodman has been involved in the floral industry for 37 years. In 1974 he entered the industry as the Vice President and General Manager of the Wire ServiceDivision of Florafax International. From 1979 to 1982 he operated a large retail florist and nursery operation in Eugene, Oregon. He founded Floral Finance, Inc. in 1982 and in cooperation with AFS began publishing Floral Finance, a monthly newsletter aimed at providing “Financial information, education and control for the retail florist.” This publication continues to this day and is still the industry’s only publication dedicated to the financial side of running a flower shop. In 1983 he wrote the original version of Rosebud (now called Eagle Technologies), the #1 selling floral software in the industry through 2000, which is now owned, developed and distributed by Teleflora. In 1987 he wrote the only financial manual for the retail florist, The Profit Minded Florist. In addition he has conducted numerous educational seminars throughout the United States and Canada over the past 37 years. Paul started Goodman’s BottomLine Group in 2006 – a small group of larger florists focused on improving bottom line performance through one-on-one consulting and group meetings. Floral Finance is now owned by Teleflora, however, Paul continues to write the monthly publication. He received his MBA from Stanford University in 1973 and is a CPA.

Sue Bagge: International Design
The Basic Principles of Ikebanna
Cost: $75.00 NON MNSFA Member $150.00
The goal of the ikebana artist is to communicate an idea, thought, or feeling through creative form. This requires a complete understanding of the various characteristics of nature, a sense of imagination, and the technical knowledge to transform these features into artistic form with rhythm, balance and harmony. The higher the level of artistic expression, the greater the encounter between nature, the flower arranger, and those who view the arrangement. Thus, ikebana is an art of personal enrichment and an art to be shared and interpreted by others according to their own individual imagination and experience No previous experience is required. Experienced Ikebana practitioners at any level are welcome. There is space available. Sue Bagge has studied the Sogetsu School of Ikebana for almost 3 decades and it about to receive her 4th teaching certificate. She has traveled to Japan several times to attend Ikebana conferences and to study the culture and the gardens. She has developed workshops for the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum that have focused on Ikebana using plants that are native to our area. She is also a Horticulturist and landscaper known in Minnesota for her garden and floral designs as well as for teaching. She has exhibited all 28 years at The Minneapolis Institute Art In Bloom and has done several of the museum’s Japanese exhibitions

Principles of Design
This course might well be called “Tools of Design”. These principles are not arbitrary rules: they are constant guidelines.
Concepts of the Care and Handling of Foliage and Flowering Plants
Plants add a touch to our homes and brighten our indoor surroundings. In the course you will learn the Plant’s Morphology, the Plant’s Physiology, Plant Nomenclature and much more.
Care and Handling of Cut Flowers and Foliage
Cut flowers, even though they have been separated from the parent plant, are living, actively metabolizing plant parts. You will explore the factors affecting quality, tips for handling roses, pre-treatments and Care and Handling Terms.
Customer Relations
In today’s market, our thoughts, plans and directions must be focused on those who make our business and its success possible, the customer.
Delivery Made Simple
In today’s 24-hour, self service society, few customer-oriented personalized services remain. Delivery is a service that is almost extinct in retailing and is the one commodity the floral industry has to keep customers coming to our shops.
The Art of Effective Visual Merchandising
Merchandising is anything that you do to develop your business and move your product. The course will show you how to prepare a merchandising calendar, explain productive use of space, design, lighting, signage and much more.
Employee Relations
A business cannot function effectively without people. Too many business owners and managers tend to neglect the human side of their operation. This course addresses locating qualified people, hiring techniques, interviewing, training, motivation and much more.
Advertising and Promotion
In today’s advertising market the consumer is over exposed to commercial messages. You must get noticed. This course will provide you tools for success.
Daily Business Procedures
The goal of Daily Business Procedures is to acquaint the individual with the basic definitions and business procedures needed to operate a floral shop on a day to day basis.
